Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Well, the death metal boys from Florida are back after a short break and seem to be relatively pissed.

From the outset of "Heretic" you can tell this is a Morbid Angel album. This is a great follow up to the previous release "Gateways to Annihilation" and continues the trend of having alphabetical titles in the catalog. Musically, this album is just absolutely fucking heavy.

Trey has created some kick ass riffs and drummer Pete Sandoval proves he can still pound the drums like he used to. Steve Tucker reprises his vocal duties and seems to be filling things in quite nicely. The trademark squeals and crushing groove are in the album.

Overall, this is a great album, but note that there are a few different versions out there. There is the regular 2 disc set which was released in the US. Over in Europe, those guys get a box set of the album which comes with some stickers and a bunch of other stuff. The only hang up I have with the album is the bonus tracks. They are all instrumentals and are all short. While this is a great way to see what talent Trey Azagtoth is with his guitar, it is not something I really feel like listening to after a crushing album of death metal.

Anyone who has enjoyed this band should go pick this album up. And anyone who is looking for a good death metal album should grab this as well.
