Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

When someone first told me about Even X they described them as ‘emo’, so I was not at all excited about Mr. Nailer looping this on to my slant top desk for review. I am happy to say that after a couple of listens to the album, I must relay this is far from being a hardcore kid’s release.

The debut is surprisingly sharp, clever and deep lyrically and melodious and grunt throated vocally. The vocals are well balanced throughout the entire album with the song placement just as important to keep you listening on. It can get a little ‘this world is too hard let me hang myself’ at times but generally topics range from war to isolation.

The music follows the well worn lines of Sevendust with a bit of Tool and Marilyn Manson thrown in the mix. Highlights are definitely the title song ‘Angry Mirror’ and ‘Let the Bitch Come Up’, but by and large all songs are worth their two cents.

Led by vocalist Ricky Kay, Corey Druman’s on guitar, Jason Bates on drums and bassist Darren Isky, Even X show an immense amount of talent which will no doubt launch their career into the future (or for as long as our continuing fascination with nu-metal goes on).

The album was produced by the troubled Logan Mader, former guitarist for Machine Head and Soulfly, who finally looks as if he has found a home behind the mixing console.

I have heard people bitching that the album goes for too long but it isn’t hard to push the fucking double arrow button. Even X has given us an album that we can dig in a market that has forced us into the act of coprophagy too many times lately.

On a side note, check out the website. It is without a doubt the best I have ever seen and big thumbs up to the website designers for a fucking cracker.
