Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Every year I come upon a couple really great hard rock bands. Sweden's Mother Misery and their formidable 'grandiosity' hit early capturing the breadbasket sound of the American Midwest. With the year almost over, The Last Act's second album provided the bookend to 2004 with 'No Good Deed Goes Unpunished'. After an oddly shimmering opening instrumental, 'Broken Dawn' lights up the CD with a crisp, raw sound reminiscent of 1979-82 when the 70s gave way to the harder-edged 80s and speed and hair were mostly underground thoughts. The rock sensibility here is so perfectly done that I'm convinced that somebody in the band is a musical genius or they've all spent copious amounts of time listening to early Ozzy, Riot, Leppard, Zeppelin and the pummeling of Cream drummer Ginger Baker. Colin Murphy's vocals have an odd early-Ozzy tone (made better with slight vocal treatments) and a couple numbers--Full Volumage and Guilded Justice--sound like the production budget was already busted, but they're easily forgiven with the loose, painful jams of 'Struggle' and the fantastic title track. There's plenty of rough edges for a label/company to file off and some inconsistencies to grow out of, but overall The Last Act is a class hard rock act and one of my favorite independent CDs for the year.
