Band Rotting Christ Title Theogonia Type LP/EP Company Season of Mist YOR 2007 Style Black Popular Reviews ![]() ![]()
Rotting Christ with Theogonia seems to succeed with what they were trying to do since Khronos: release an album like their debut album, an album of pure black metal. And they succeeded. Theogonia sounds fresh, revealing a band that knows how to create high quality black metal, without being repetitive. The album is better than their last three releases, so they have finally succeeded to return to their roots. The album is based on Hesiod opus (Theogony) which is a huge poem about the creation of the world and the birth of the gods. Some of the songs names are names of Titans (who ruled Earth before the Olympian Gods) like: “Phobos’ Synagogue” which is about the Titan Phobos (Phobos means fear), “Helios Hyperion”, who was the father of the sun and the moon. The whole album is full of this stuff, which I find to be a fantastic idea. The production was made by Sakis and it’s the best production that the band ever had. The production focuses more on the guitars without leaving unheard the drums or the bass guitar. Also, the drums in this record (in addition with the past) are amazing. It’s the first time that Themis plays so great. The vocals of Sakis (with his usual pronunciation, fucking cult!) are great. His grim vocals sound as always and his clean are amazing, creating a dark atmosphere. Also this is one of the few albums that the bass guitar is sound so clearly. To sum up: Theogonia is in my opinion Rotting Christ best release since Thy Mighty Contract. It is one of the best releases of 2007 and one amazing black metal. If you are a fan of Rotting Christ you will love it, if you are not familiar with the band, it’s a great album to start with.
