Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Deranged’s latest effort, “Plainfield Cemetery”, is a 37 minute crash course in high-speed death metal.

From the opening riff of the first track, “Beaten, Raped, Fuckin’ Left to Die”, the band takes a mach 3 speed and runs with it throughout the entire length of the album. Some may prefer the fast paced, blast beat driven style, but unfortunately, it leaves the album lacking any stylistic changes. The tempo stays almost completely the same from song to song never giving the listener time to soak in what’s going on.

Everything just seems to fly by with this album, ending just as quickly as it begins. This makes things pretty boring after a while, because every track basically sounds the same. In fact, the only semblance of a breakdown or tempo change takes place in the tracks “Mutilate and Dump You” (probably the best song on the album) and “God is Dead”.

From a positive standpoint, the album is surprisingly well-produced, something I wouldn’t expect from a label like Listenable. The vocals and lyrics are fucking brutal! And the drums, although playing essentially the same pattern throughout, are impressive.

I would recommend this album to anyone who likes the high-speed death metal style of bands like Cattle Decapitation, but Deranged would do very well to slow things down every once in a while.
