Experimental jazz-metal?

That's the term used by NYC instrumental quartet Titan To Tachyons on their website, and it's hard to think of any more appropriate way of describing it.

Formed by New Zealand-born guitarist Sally Gates (formerly of Gigan, Orbweaver and Judas Priestess, among others), the group initially included bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, others) and drummer Kenny Grohowski (Imperial Triumphant, PAKT, etc.). When Dunn became too busy with other commitments, Matt Hollenberg --the guitarist in the avante-garde metal/noisecore band Cleric and Philadelphia progressive rockers iNFiNiEN, who had also worked with Grohowski in the John Zorn-affiliated Simulacrum project --took his place, playing the bass VI (a six-string instrument, usually tuned an octave below a guitar's standard tuning).

It was mostly this lineup that recorded the band's 2020 debut album, Cactides, with Dunn appearing on one track, "Everybody's Dead, Dave." At some point thereafter, a decision was made to officially expand the band's lineup to a quartet, with both Hollenberg and Dunn on board, the first recorded results being 2022's Vonals album.

This video interview took place at a show in Providence, Rhode Island, shortly after the band completed a tour opening for the Melvins and Napalm Death.
