Fret not nice people. All is not dark and black in Norway; birthland of a thousand pale-faced screechers. Circus Maximus is the uplifting pop of American 70's album rock and the sugary sweet taste of Europe (the band). It's rock with enough major chord cheer to void it of any of abrasion and enough Yes-like progressive jingly diddling to make parts really, really boring. Michael Eriksen has great pipes, close to Joey Tempest and Great White's Jack Russell but if you're gonna sing "I'm slowly fading into nothingness" then some soul is truly needed. The musicianship is excellent and the production is as vibrant as a colorful new big top tent, but the character of this circus lies closer to the sillier acts than to the death-defiers who really rule the ring and capture the audience gasps.
