I first heard of Blackstone Cherri while still in school dreading some test I was going to have to fail because I forgot about it and was talking to another student and he suggested that I take a listen to them. When I asked him about them he said that they were metal with a twist. I asked what he meant and he said I would have to check them out. So I did.
At first I wasnít impressed, they sounded so much like the other music that was out and being played already. They reminded me of Skid Row with Bret Michaels on vocals. I listened for a few songs and took the disk out, leaving it for about 6 months. Last week was the first time I listened to it in a long time and I began to see what my fellow student saw in them.
I saw a lot of raw talent being openly displayed in the lyrics and in the songs. When I listened closely to the melodies from the music I knew that they were singing what they truly believed in and about what they wanted in life. Now when I listen to it, I feel what they are saying and the songs come alive more.
If I had to give this band's sound a name I would have to say 80ís metal revisited. If you took Sebastian Bach and Bret Michaels and put them together and updated them you would get Blackstone Cherri. It's not teenage sounding by any means, but has a mix of hard rocking and ballads on it. People will especially like it if they are into Skid Row, SubHuman Race and Poison (when CC wasnt in the band) Native Tongue.
My all around rating of this band and this cd is that it's one you would want to keep in your collection as a personal favorite, so I'd give it a 6. I wouldn't rush out and purchase it but I would consider picking it up if you somehow managed to find it at a store.
This 2001 release is their first attempt as a band, and can be located at www.blackstonecherri.com.
