Dark Ruin was formed in 2001, formerly under the name Dead Reckoning, in the heart of southwest Virginia. Throughout their conquest to grasp the exact musical vision that eluded them, Dark Ruin endured many line up changes including a couple of drummers and numerous bass players.

Dark Ruin originated as the brain child of Josh Cahoon (vocals) and Keith Dunagan (guitar) shortly there followed by Billy Moran (git fiddle) thus rounding out Dark Ruin’s three pronged frontline. (The following section is in its condensed form, Dark Ruin actually went though three drummers and nine bass players before solidifying its line up) The first attempt to fill out the concussion zone was filled out was by drummer Brian Ferguson and bass player Bobby. Though Brian filled the drummer position well his vision and style weren’t the piece of the puzzle needed to create the picture in their head.

Shortly thereafter, Brian parted ways with the band but will always remain a friend and is now playing with brother band War Theory. Bass player bobby didn’t work out either. While practicing in their warehouse space Dark Ruin was introduced to Trypticon drummer Mike Gomez and guitarist Joey McDaniel. Joey quickly joined the fold by filling in the bass position. Soon after his former band mate Mike Gomez sealed the position as drummer and the Dark Ruin war machine began to make its first major steps towards it destiny.

Though the line up seemed complete, Joey felt a calling elsewhere and moved to California, Joey’s departure was a hard hit to the band just as it was starting to break a stride but no hard feelings fell between him and the remaining members. Dark Ruin proceeded on without a bass player for a stint of time until Billy received a call from long time friend Justin Bruner. Justin’s former band Fall Well’s Nightmare had recently fallen apart. Justin filled the bass position that had held the band back for too long and sealed the lineup that is now and forever Dark Ruin. The band hit the studio shortly thereafter and pounded out their power house twelve track debut album The Settlement in an impressive four days.

The beast now gaining momentum at an alarming rate has shared the stage with the likes of Dope, Crematorium, Art of Destruction, E Town Concrete, Mortician, and Decide. Though the band as a whole is still relatively young all of its members are seasoned players that strive for excellence and to push the boundaries of metal.
