Def Leppard "On Through The Night" (1980)

When Def Leppard started out they were just five young men from Sheffield, England. Joe Elliot, Pete Willis, and Steve Clark had a dream to create rock and roll. They discovered an amazing drummer. Even at the age of 15, Rick Allen had a talent that will truly never be forgotten or dismissed. Def Leppard was born in 1977 on rock and roll dreams. The band members' common sense approach and serious love of music created a timeless and true rock and roll sound with lots of tension amongst each other as well. They all had their vices, addictions, and life problems, but they always seemed to keep them second to the music. "On Through The Night" is rock and roll, honest and pure.

Joe had a voice that created an unmistakable sound. Pete, Steve and Sav created music that could melt hearts and Rick Allen gave us the beat that we still tap our feet to today. "On Through The Night" is solid, beautiful and so giving of the vision that Def Leppard had. To some, if not most, it's just another band creating the same music, but to us who feel a sense of joy when they hear the first riffs of “Rock Brigade” or “Hello America”, it's truly a vision of hard work and dedication.

"Hello America" starts out without a sound other than the boys sending the welcome to America. Then it breaks into rock and roll. The riffs are so heartfelt and strong, that it makes you want to get up and dance. The drums make me tap my foot each time I hear them. You can hear the heartfelt sound that is Def Leppard in this song. You don’t hear the pop sound you get when you listen to their later albums; you get solid and pure rock and roll. "Wasted" is reminds me a lot of Motley Crue. Even though they sound nothing alike, they have that harder sound to them with this song. When you hear the first few seconds of this song, it feels like it should be on a Motley Album. It's hard, fast and dirty, and its one of the best songs on the album.

Since they started, Def Leppard has endured losses, heartbreak, and a fan base that some may never experience. They have always taken their success and fame on a day to day basis, knowing that without the fans they wouldn’t be who or what they are today. Twenty-five years after they put out their first album, Def Leppard are still rocking at festivals and events around the world, still creating music, and creating new fans everywhere, both young and old, giving them more to strive for and be proud of. The Leps have been leaders of rock and roll for well over twenty years and will continue to beat the odds with dedicated fans and music that melts our hearts.

Why Def Leppard ever went in the other direction with their music is beyond me. I have always enjoyed this album, I think it is one of their best. I listen to the other albums, but with not as much love as I do this one. Def Leppard should have been a success with such songs as "Wasted" and "Rocks Off", not "Pour Some Sugar On Me" or "Hysteria".
